Is it your dream to have a sparkling water surface in the middle of a beautiful garden, but can't manage it because of the omnipresent pests? If you're worried about otters, herons, cats or martens, scent fences can help you. We'll introduce you to reliable ways to drive out otters, herons and other pests.
Why protect ponds and lakes at all
Should you invest in pond protection at all, you ask? In our experience and that of our customers, we can tell you unequivocally - yes. The most common reason to purchase pond and pond pest control is, of course, fish attacks. In addition, owners of stocked ponds face infestations of duck nests, geese, and other farmed waterfowl.
Pests in ponds and lakes
Otters and herons are undoubtedly the best-known pests of fish. However, it is also worth getting a pest repellent to control cats, martens or raccoons.
River otter
If you are looking for a way to get rid of pests on your fish, then the first thing you should do is to ensure that your pond is well fenced against otters. These are agile animals that can take out an entire pond and a large part of the pond in one night. You should therefore definitely not put off getting an otter scarecrow. For more information on how to protect your pond from otters, but also the otters themselves, see the detailed article on otter protection with a scent fence or the short article on otter scent fences in the advice section.
Herons
Herons are obvious avian pests on ponds. Like otters, they prey on fish and can eat quite a lot of them. If you are looking for a way to protect your pond from herons, we recommend an electric fence, which you can read about below.
Cats
Cats sometimes enjoy fish too, although cats catch fish for fun rather than for their own sustenance. Again, the electric fence described below will protect your fish against cats.
Martens
In some cases, your pond or lake can also be invaded by martens. Although they tend to feed on insects, fruit and small mammals, fish can sometimes come in handy. However, they can cause more problems in the attics of houses or under the bonnets of cars.
Raccoon
In recent years, the northern raccoon has been causing more and more problems. It eats practically everything it comes across, including fish, frogs, eggs, clams, and chickens. It causes problems not only for fishermen, but also for keepers of ducks, chickens, and other birds. In addition, it has no natural predator in our area, which is why it was quickly listed as an invasive species.
Don't put off buying an otter and other pest repellent. Get an otter scent fence before they catch the fish in your pond or lake.

Troubleshooting
We offer several ways to get rid of pests. On our behalf, we can definitely recommend scent fences to protect ponds and lakes, whose effectiveness is further enhanced by a combination of scent and electric fencing. We also offer universal green nets, which can be used to build, for example, otter fences, as well as portable outdoor cages. The last option, of course, is to trap or eliminate pests using traps, sinkers and other similar devices. However, these methods are best avoided, as many of them are on the edge or beyond the law. So let's take a look at the appropriate ways to protect your pond from predators using fences.
If you're not sure which of the above unwelcome guests are causing damage on your property, get some photo traps. They make it easy to spot pests and then choose the best way to protect your garden ponds and lakes just for you.
Odour fence against otters and martens
For pond fish protection, you can primarily rely on pond and pond odour fences, among which you will find odour fences for otters. And if your pond or pond has just been visited by a marten, an odour fence against martens will also help with protection.
Odour fences against wildlife mimic the smell of the natural enemies of the selected pests. This gives the pest the feeling that it could lose its life in the defined area and would rather not enter it. We explain the effectiveness of the odour fence in more detail in the advice section, where we describe the principle of operation of the odour repellent.
Each set of odour fence consists of:
- Odour fence concentrate - the most important element of the odour scarecrow, which produces an imitation of the predator's smell.
- The carrier of the scent fence - a biodegradable material into which the concentrate is applied.
- Odour fence adapter - used to protect the concentrate and carrier.

Installing and maintaining a scent fence
You can easilyinstall a scent fence. First of all, you need to take a good look around the water area. Look for trees, bushes, fence posts, walls and other places where scent fences can be placed. If you have not found such objects, you can use wooden stakes to enclose the area or fill in the gaps between objects. The spacing between scarecrows should be 5 metres.
Then screw or otherwise attach the scent fence adapters to the selected objects. Then insert one piece of scent fence carrier - BIO10-PO carrier or BIO10-S carrier - into each adapter and activate it with the selected otter or marten scent concentrate. Activation is done by injecting the concentrate into each carrier at three points for one second.
Installation is not the end of the job. In fact, odour fence concentrates lose their effectiveness after 2 to 4 weeks. Concentrates must therefore be renewed over time. When buying, therefore, calculate the amount of concentrate per carrier, not only for the initial application but also for later refills. Our clever calculator will help you with the calculation.
You will find specific instructions for installing and renewing an odour trap in the download section, where we have also prepared detailed instructions for otter odour traps.
Odour and electric otter fence for pond and garden pond
Whether you need to increase the effectiveness of your odour repellent or are looking for a single solution against various pests, then the odour and electric fence kits definitely deserve your attention. The electric pond fence creates a solid fence around the water area supported by a weak electric current. This prevents pests from accessing the water surface.
Pokud si pořídíte sadu pachového a elektrického ohradníku k jezírkům, získáte v jednom setu ohrazení rybníčku proti vydře, kočce i skvělý způsob, jak zabránit volavce, aby vám vyžrala jezírko.

Installing a scent and electric fence
When combining fences, scent fences are installed just as you would install them separately. But you don't have to worry about installing an electric fence either. You can easily install electric fences for otters and other wildlife too.
You place the poles in the chosen area and then connect the wire of the electric game fence to them. Then you just need to connect the wire, the earth and the mains or battery power supply to the source of the electric fence.
Act early. Protect your property from pests before they do damage. If you are unsure about choosing a scent or electric fence, contact us. We'll be happy to help.
Universal pond netting
The universal green nets make it easy to create a barrier around your pond to protect your fish. Simply stretch the nets to the desired location using the plastic poles we supply with the nets. The nets are also mobile, so you can move them with your left back.
You can choose a net with larger meshes and a height of 112 cm, a net with smaller meshes and a height of 90 cm or a net with smaller meshes and a height of 80 cm. An entrance gate makes it easy to enter the defined area.
Traps and other unauthorised traps
If you are tempted to use otter traps or any other method of trapping otters, forget about them immediately. As we have already mentioned, otters are protected animals and you can be fined tens of thousands of crowns for killing them. You must also not trap or catch herons, which can only be hunted by hunters during the designated hunting periods.
In general, we therefore recommend that you avoid all methods that could harm the animals, especially as you can use a number of the aforementioned safe and lawful methods as protection for your garden pond and ponds. We wish you the best of luck in protecting your ponds, lakes and other land. We are here for you whenever you are not sure.
