Meet the river otter
At first glance, the river otter looks like a small, harmless and often cute little beast. However, the opposite is often true. Otters live close to watercourses and standing water and their range can be up to 30 km long on a single stream. They are nocturnal animals and can travel up to 10 km during the night. They can also easily reach gardens further away from the water. Otters feed not only on fish, but also on crustaceans, molluscs, amphibians and small mammals.

Damage by otters in ponds and lakes
Otters cause the most damage in garden ponds and ponds, as they can wipe out an entire pond of fish during the night. If herons or cats are also present, the fish will certainly be devastated. Not only will the predators catch large numbers of them, but the remaining fish will also suffer from stress, which can lead to their death. Protecting ponds and ponds from predators, for example by using scent fences to protect the water areas, is therefore more than appropriate.
As a pest, the river otter can also show itself on lawns and flowerbeds around ponds, which, like the pond itself, can be spoiled by its droppings. Therefore, do not underestimate the protection of the pond and its surroundings.
However, when choosing how to expel otters, do not forget about the statutory protection of otters, which are protected animals. You can be fined a lot for killing them. We discuss other ways to prevent damage to ponds and lakes in our article on how to protect your pond and fish pond not only from otters but also from other pests.

How scent fences work
So what are scent fences? They are a reliable pest control device that mimics natural territory marking. So a scent fence mimics the scent of predators and creates an invisible fence against otters or other pests around your property. It simply tells unwanted pests that their predator is in the area and not to enter.
We achieve really great results with our otter scarecrows. We are proud of our proven principle of scarecrows, which boasts particularly positive reviews for our scarecrow fences. Read the positive testimonials from our customers.
What does the odour fence consist of
This pest repellent consists of a scent fence concentrate, a scent fence carrier and an adapter that are installed in a suitable location. Such a location can be trees, bushes, poles or wooden posts around the property or area that the pests are to avoid. This makes it easy to build your own scent fence kit from the concentrate and scent fence accessories for your exact needs.
Theodour fence concentrate is selected according to the type of pest or purpose of use. Before purchasing, you need to calculate the amount of concentrate required per carrier, which our clever calculator will help you with. Next, you need a suitable odour fence carrier, into which the selected odour concentrate is applied. You can choose a BIO10-PO odour carrier, a BIO10-S odour carrier or woody wool rolls, which are ideal against moles. The carriers are inserted into the carrier adapter, which protects them from rain, thus extending their duration of action.

Installation and application of the odour fence
There really is nothing complicated about using a scent fence and you can install it with your left back. So how do you use a scent fence? First, look around the pond to see if you can find suitable places for mounting the adapter such as bushes and trees. If so, you're all set. Otherwise, place wooden stakes around the pond at intervals of about 5 metres.
Then attach the adapters and insert the selected carrier of the odour fence into them. Then apply the odour concentrate to the carrier at 3 points.
Use and maintenance of the odour fence
The work does not end with the installation of the odour fence, as otter fences also require maintenance. The most important thing is to renew the concentrate in the odour fence, which should be done after about 2 to 4 weeks. If there are more otters around the pond, renew the odour concentrate at a frequency of 1 to 2 weeks.

Odour and electric fence for otters
Want to boost your garden pond protection even further? Then bet on a combination of an odour and electric fence. In fact, we've added a fence set to our Pacho-lek odour fences for otter pests.
In the electric otter fence, a small amount of current is passed through the electric fence, which clearly alerts the pests to the impassable location. The electric fence thus creates a solid protection for the fish in the pond, through which the otters cannot get through. By adding an electric fence, you will therefore achieve an even better fencing of the pond against otters. In our e-shop, you can get a set of odour and electric fence with mains power supply, which will serve as a reliable barrier around the pond to protect the fish.

Are there other ways to protect against otters?
In addition to the aforementioned scent and electric fencing, there are other ways to keep otters away. Otter traps are among the most frequently sought methods of repelling these pests. However, you must have a permit from the county to trap otters.
In addition, otters are protected animals, the disposal of which is strictly forbidden. Traps that kill otters must therefore not be used. Forget about using poisons, sinkers and other methods of disposing of these pests.
You can not only protect your pond and pond with odour and electric fences, but also with pond netting. You can fence your pond with, for example, a universal green net, which prevents pests from accessing the water surface. Moreover, the green colour will not interfere too much with the appearance of the pond.
